History
Oakland Troop 203 was chartered in February, 1961 and has operated continuously ever since. During this time, it has served the community in many ways, such as countless hours of service hours, and helping scouts grow into the best people they can be. Troop 203 places emphasis on helping scouts grow to become responsible, self-reliant, and a great leader. This is done through a program centered on the outdoors, community service, and of course, fun!
Activities
Troop 203 is centered on camping, hiking and the outdoors. We have a meeting at Saint Theresa Catholic School every monday (excluding holidays and after camping trips) at 7:00-8:00 pm, and 1-2 camping trips per month. We also have many service projects, where we go into the community and help out in any way we can. This can include building benches, terraforming, and much more. Throughout the year, scouts also go on day and night hikes, and explore nature.
Summer Activities
Every year in the summer, Troop 203 goes to a scout summer camp called Wente. At Wente, scouts earn merit badges, gain skills, and continue to grow into Troop 203's community.
A week-long trip also happens during the summer, for older scouts. Some common trips include Northern Tier or other High Adventure activities, backpacking trips in places like Yosemite, and so on.
Communication
News of activities and events are communicated in a variety of ways. These include:
Emails to parents and scouts
Announcements/flyers at meetings
Scoutbook
Scout Leadership
Scout leadership is important in Troop 203. The troop is evenly split into 4 patrols of scouts, each led by a Patrol Leader (PL) and an Assistant Patrol Leader (APL). The troop as a whole is led by the Senior Patrol Leader (SPL), and Assistant Senior Patrol Leader (ASPL). The SPL and ASPL are older, more experienced scouts who have proven that they are trustworty leaders and people. The Patrol Leader Councill, or PLC, is a collective group of all of the scouts who have taken a leadership position in the troop.
